This was actually issued last night before midnight - the protesters are going to stay until the army move in. This is worrying to say the least. As of 12:31 PM, just after noon, the streets are still lined with people. (UPDATE): An hour ago, the riot police (PTU) were ordered to withdraw, but there is no guarantee that they will not return. Somebody on Facebook has suggested that they only pulled out due to stock markets opening (Central is the Central Business District of Hong Kong) and that they might return later.
Some of my classmates are going to go down and see the action, but personally, I'd tell them not to go.

I've been following all of your updates. I wanted to thank you. The people of HK deserve their own completely autonomous region, at the very least.

An (im)practical wagon. I love it. Shame the E39 M5 wagon was rarely a thing.

Also, it's probably a good idea to not go, just to be on the safe side. If we learned anything from Ferguson, it's not pretty.

okay, I know I may sound like an uninformed American (which is probably true, but at least I know and am aware that I am uniformed) what is all the protesting for? who is protesting? what are they protesting for? And why?

I think that the people of HK are correct. The Beijing government is slowly trying to usurp the agreed upon rights of the people. Very slowly, but steadily. Keep it going, you modern day Patrick Henry's.

What possible comparison can be made between Hong Kong and Ferguson?

Basically, as far as I can make out, the protesting is against People's Republic of China's government. Hong Kong is funny because it works on the basis of "one country, two systems" - in China, they have one form of government, in Hong Kong they have another. China is allegedly trying to influence the HK government by attempting to place/choose its preferred government representatives in the HK government, which allows the PRC better control over HK.
When HK was handed back to China from the British in 1997, an agreement was made that Hong Kong would keep its freedom for 50 years. Technically, Hong Kong is a part of China, but because of its interesting political system, many see Hong Kong as a country on its own.
Thus, the general public consensus appears to conclude that this political manoeuvring by China placing its own/preferred representatives in the government. This prevents the peoples of Hong Kong from democratically choosing the people they think is best for the future of the country. But don't quote me entirely on this, the issue is so touchy and sensitive that details can be hard to distinguish and make clear. I don't know the full facts (because my Cantonese isn't the best), but I understand most of it.

youve described it fairly well, china wants their own puppet in place, HK wants a real democratic representative who has HK issues on their mind not China. The HK do not want to become part of China however the Chinese minority(?) have a voice too and they do.

With riot police withdrawing from the situation one can speculate that there will be a heavy-handed response from another form of uniformed "peacekeepers".
